Natural Oobleck

Natural Oobleck

Have you ever tried making Oobleck at home before? If no, let me quickly explain what oobleck is before I share with you our favourite tried and tested recipe.

Oobleck is a substance made from cornflour (cornstarch if you are in the US) and water. It behaves like a solid when force is applied to it and like a liquid if that force is released. It is such a unique sensory base for children (and adults) to discover and play with! What I love most about it is that it can be used in so many different ways!

Here are some ideas:

*Colour it your child's favourite colour or colours

*Add botanicals, essentials oils or bioglitter

*Add other materials to it, like little shells for an ocean theme, rocks, crystals or even toy animals to free from the gooey mixture

*Add interesting spoons and bowls to play with - we like using slotted spoons as the oobleck with fall through the holes and drip down

*Once your children loose interest in the oobleck, consider adding some water and homemade fizz powder to spark curiosity again and extend the play

It can get quite messy, so best to take this acitivty out into nature and plan for a change of clothes :)

Enjoy!

How to make it:

Mix 3 cups of cornflour (cornstarch) with 1 cup of water (coloured with natural colour powders). Be patient when mixing and resist the urge to add more water. The two materials will slowly ix together given you that gooey, half liquid half solid mixture. Add any materials of your choice and you're ready to go!
